VSB Budget Information - Key dates: April 12 and 14

4/11/2016

The VSB proposed budget is out. As parents of students in the Vancouver school district, we are in the midst of a major funding shortfall for programs and staff that work directly with our kids. We are encouraging all Livingstone parents to investigate the proposed VSB budget for next year and consider what affect it will have on your families and take action.

The most important information to know is that now is the time to make your voice heard at the public input meetings. That information can be found here. There are currently 2 meetings, the 12th and the 14th. A third may be added if needed.

We will attempt to provide our families with current information here, but we encourage all of you to join facebook groups, sign up for emails, and follow on twitter those advocacy groups and organizations that speak for you.

Below you will find links and resources that you might find helpful. Please email us if you have more to add. Please note that as a local PAC, our primary goal is to remain as non-partisan as possible and assist you in getting the information you need to make informed decisions regarding the message you want to send and the action you want to take.

Budget: a message from the DPAC

2/26/2015

Unfortunately, the 2015 Budget that was released on February 17 does not fund public education adequately; on the contrary, it makes further cuts to a system that has already been cut time and again. Vancouver DPAC has put out a press release in which it deplores the cuts to education, especially in the context of a huge budget surplus, tax cuts for the wealthiest British Columbians, and increased funding to private schools.

You can find the press release here: http://vancouverdpac.us4.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=d21534669071d85cd4923da2f&id=4037296ac7&e=c1769fd1e4

If parents are wanting to contact MLAs but not sure what to say or how to do it, the Fix BC Education blog has an email that sent by DPAC executive Jennifer Stewart to every BC Liberal MLA as well as to the NDP leader and education critic; also listed there are the email addresses for all Liberal MLAs.http://vancouverdpac.us4.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=d21534669071d85cd4923da2f&id=4751aeac64&e=c1769fd1e4 Please feel free to use any/all of the wording for your own letter.

Parents can look up their MLA's contact info here: http://vancouverdpac.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d21534669071d85cd4923da2f&id=f02135fcaf&e=c1769fd1e4

A group called "MLA Playdate" that emerged during last year's strike has put some suggested actions that parents can take on its website:http://vancouverdpac.us4.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=d21534669071d85cd4923da2f&id=6b80bf06db&e=c1769fd1e4

Mr. Mitzel shared briefly with us at our last PAC meeting some of the exciting changes that are underway in British Columbia schools. Information can be found at the BC government site dedicated to communicating these changes and providing an opportunity for parents and educators to review them.

From the website:
Rethinking Curriculum
Extensive consultations have identified some positive changes that will transform and modernize the B.C. education system. Transformation in curriculum and assessment will help teachers create learning environments that are both engaging and personalized for students.

  • Find out how these changes will support learning

Draft Curriculum
Review curriculum drafts that are designed to be flexible, competency-driven, concept-based and inclusive. Right now, Kindergarten to Grade 9 curriculum documents in several areas of learning are available.

  • Review the curriculum drafts
  • Get an overview of redesigned curriculum components

Redesigning Assessment
Redesigning assessment will focus on bringing coherence to curriculum, assessment, and communicating student learning.
